I have gone to Mann Eye Institute for over 20 years and have been very happy with Dr. Morello. He was always very attentive to my sight needs and I would absolutely trust him. A little over a year ago, my cataracts got worse and he recommended cataract surgery. He said there was an option to do lasik and after a short talk with a person who explained some about the surgery, I opted to go with it, even though it would be over $8,000. She and the financial person assured me that I would not have to wear glasses ever again. And I was given the booklet that explained about the surgery. I was 70 at the time and had worn glasses since I was 10. I am near sighted and have worn bifocals until about seven years ago when we realized I needed trifocals. So I was told and also read in the booklet that I would not have to wear glasses ever again if I went with the most expensive procedure. If I went with the less expensive procedure, I would probably have to wear readers. So after making my appointment, I rethought the idea of spending so much money and decided to go with the least expensive procedure and just wear readers. I had three weeks to wait and so I called the financial person and said I wanted to change procedures and she was an excellent salesperson who was successful in convincing me that I would never have to wear glasses again if I would stay with the most expensive procedure. I agreed but was not at all comfortable with that decision and called her again. and again she convinced me that the most expensive one was the best. I still agreed but was still uncomfortable and called the head financial person. He assured me that I would never have to wear glasses again.. So I had the procedure done. About six weeks after having both eyes done, I was having trouble seeing close up. I was concerned about that and was told sometimes a gas substance can form behind the lens and I could have that removed for several hundred dollars more. So I did that. Still my near vision was not any better. I broke down and bought over the counter readers. Then went back and had my eyes checked again. Guess what? The doctor recommended more surgery on one eye! I balked at that and he recommended a contact for that eye. that didn't work and he recommended another strength for that eye after I turned down the option of another surgery. After all, I had already spent close to $9,000 by now.. It has been a little over a years since my surgery and last contact does no good! Actually my close up sight is worse now than before the surgery! I have to wear the readers, which give me a headache if I have them on too long. I cannot read labels at the store; I cannot crochet anymore: when cooking and reading a recipe I have to put them on and take them of to read and then cook. And then of course there is the added sunglasses. Before with glasses, I had the darkening type and therefore one pair of glasses for everything! This line of "you'll never have to wear glasses again" is not true. I hate that I had this done! Yes, it was my decision, but I went on the word of three people and the brochure that my glasses wearing days were over. I am miserable most of the time with this situation I now am in. There is nothing I can do about it except maybe have another surgery and now they tell me, there is no guarantee it will work and it would just add a couple of more thousand dollars to my debt. At 71, I cannot afford that and for the rest of my life I will be miserable with the situation I find myself in. My advice to anyone who is nearsighted, weigh your options very carefully. If I had thought it out more carefully, I would have realized that the surgery cannot correct both far and near sightedness without the bifocal. And there was no bifocal or trifocal that could be done. I really liked Dr. Wright and Dr. Morello, but wish they had talked me through it instead of letting two ladies, one Mann's sales person, do it. All they wanted to do was make money off of me instead of listening to my concerns and adequately help me. Now my far vision is getting worse! After one year! Think it through! Also the booklet they give you to read is very misleading. Use your head about the decision to have it done. Once you do it, it cannot be undone. Also, if you are over 70, weigh the cost of the surgery against the cost of wearing glasses for the rest of your life. You won't save anything! Have the cataract surgery done and stick to you glasses! Do I still recommend Mann? Yes, for exams and glasses. I never had a problem for all these years until this surgery.
