*review for opthamalogy (medical) appt, not optometry*

I was initially quite hesitant because of the many low reviews the Pacific Eye Associates group received. I suppose people either love them or hate them. To add to that hesitation, I got an appointment with Dr. Atkins, not the highly recommended Dr. So or Dr. Fung... In fact, another reviewer said that she would never see Dr. Atkins again...

Promising, right? But beggars can't be choosers. I needed an opthamologist ASAP - my eye was so dry!!! It was killing me! I needed it fixed a month ago, and I was getting fed up with it... In the end, I was very happy with the services at Pacific Eye Associates.

I showed up knowing how people hate the waiting room and hating the rude staff. But it really wasn't so bad! I give them 3 stars for service, but 5 stars for expertise and quality of care.

3 stars for service:
- Yeah, some of the reception staff are rather rude. I overheard this one guy harping at an elderly man that he didn't let them know that the insurance changed, and so he needed to just pay the extra money...not nice at all...
- However, the other reception staff I dealt with were curt but professional (nice enough for a medical office).
- Some people complained that the waiting room is dim and depressing. But I think it's because it's more of a medical office and not a typical optometry store. People are getting their eyes dilated...you don't want bright lights...

5 stars for quality of care
- Dr. Atkins is clearly of retirement age, which would explain his non-chit-chatty demeanor. He says hello, eyes your charts for a good 5 minutes, politely asks you to place your head on the thing that they use to look at your eyes, then clearly explains the problem. No frills in terms of friendly banter, but clearly someone who is highly skilled.
- I love that the place houses a ton of highly qualified specialists. Whatever your eye issue is, they will have someone who can help. Dr. Atkins referred me to Dr. Oxford, who is an expert with dryness in the eyes. Sweet - he's not just going to fudge it himself, but found me an expert! Cool!

I have been to this office 2 times now. Yes, it's kinda crazy big and busy. But, I have never had any issues with the admins or wait times. In fact, today, every time I finished a test and was told to wait for the next, I sat down and barely even picked up the folder in my bag before they called me for the next test.

I don't get the negative reviews of Dr. So. Totally not my experience at all. He is very personable, and seems to really care, and want you to understand your eye and what is or may be going on with it. And, he explains things in ways that anyone can understand.

Also, I am VERY sensitive about eye tests--I can't stand anything coming near my eye. Last year, the assistant I saw (I don't remember her name) was good--she was patient, understanding and made it easy. Today, I saw Ashley, who I swear is a miracle worker. Woman put drops in my eye in no time flat, and even had me make it through the eye pressure machine on the 1st try (NEVER happens for me!). She has some jedi tricks!!

If it wasn't for the gret doctors at this office I think it wouldn't get any patients. I saw Dr. King and he was really kind and thoughtful. I went over to look for new frames and was taken aback by the prices. The guy shows me three frames that my insurance would cover and they looked like they were made for a kid, a kid who only liked brown. When I began asking the price on the two I did like, they were $300 and up. They don't carry all the lines the webite says. With my bad eyesite and extras I would have paid around $500 even with my coverage.

Dr. Anne Fung is on a mission to provide eye care to a lot of people. But she does not understand that allowing her staff to bellow out patient names is far from professional. Dr. Fung made statements aout how pharmaceutical companies are "taking all the money." I see. In part, this is Dr. Fung's politics at work. She is a Statist and believes in socialized medicine. This single point, regardless of anything else, will make sure that I do not recommend her or use her services again.
