Every single person we talked to about our upcoming weekend in Portland, ME warned us of the 'tourist trap floating restaurant'. It was nearly a running joke. However, on an off-season Sunday, we were looking for one last meal. Most of the places recommended to us turned out to be closed and we had had a less than stellar experience at J's Oyster the night before, so our bartender at Gritty's suggested we check this place out.

We arrived around 5:00 and were seated promptly in a great window seat. Our server was Kat, who was engaging and friendly, yet respected the fact that we were having our last date night of vacation. We ordered the 2 for $24 lobster special (one steamed and one baked-stuffed) as well as the mussels, mashed potatoes, and fried calamari. It was absolutely everything we wanted and more- we cracked lobster while wearing plastic bibs and eating delicious assorted seafood on the water. The real shocker was the price- $66 for the two of us to eat lobster and have drinks?!? So satisfying at such a reasonable cost.

The best part, however, came later. While settling into our seats on Amtrak an hour after dinner, I realized I had left my sweater and debit card there. I called to make sure they were still there and they immediately asked me my address and told me they were mailing it out. They wouldn't even let me pay the shipping & handling! We could not have made a better dinner decision.

We were only at the bar, so I can't vouch for the restaurant. I hear the restaurant is a tourist trap, but we were tourists, so who cares? Anyway, the view was cool and the drink specials were good. Plus, they had an impressive happy hour buffet. For $6 we got 2 beers and free access to the buffet which had soup, potato wedges, crudite, nachos, and broccoli bites. Basically ate dinner there. Felt gross after, but it was a deal.

Touristy and not cheap, but worth the trip. Had an excellent risotto with shrimp and asparagus on special and my husband had the Pecan crusted Haddock, both were delicious. We loved the bartender super friendly and thought the service was good. They are busy so you might need to wait a little for your food. Views are nice. And the main dining room I am heard is nice. We walked in without a resos and had to wait 20 min so we opted for the lounge which was worth it.

We ended up here completely by accident and it turned out to be GREAT! We had the lobster stew and mussels for an appetizer both of which were excellent. The mussels ranked right up there with the best I ever had in Belgium. For a main course I had the Lobster Mac & Cheese, which was the best I've ever had. They make theirs with mascarpone cheese which was unexpected and added more of a creamy flavor rather than cheesy. I was hesitant to even order this since everyone seems to make Lobster Mac & Cheese now but DiMillo's does it right.

This was a pretty big place but it was still run like the family business it started as. We were there over President's Day Weekend and apparently due to the nice weather it turned into a busy weekend that most of Portland was expecting. I though the service at DiMillo's was great but the owner even came over to apologize for the kitchen being a little slow that night due to the heavier than expected crowd. As someone who has worked in restaurants in the past it was refreshing to see an owner helping out by busing tables when it was busy.
