Porter Anderson Via Google My Business - Amy Z. Martino, MD
Dr. Amy Martino is an accomplished and personable glaucoma specialist and surgeon. I recommend her without reservation. She's fully in command of her work and gifted with a warm, friendly efficiency that you'll wish many other physicians had. "Friendly efficiency" means that she can stay on schedule, moving from patient to patient, without making you feel like you're the 89th pair of eyeballs she's seen that day. She sees you as a person. Remembers moments from past consultations. In a very big multi-professional firm like the Eye Institute of West Florida, this really counts. She's outstanding for this agile interpersonal intelligence, even before you take into account her capabilities.Dr. Martino pioneered the use of the Hydrus microstent for glaucoma in Hillsborough County, Florida, and now often implants it in conjunction with cataract surgery. This is how she handled my twin needs of lower eye pressure (for glaucoma) and cataract removal: Two surgeries, two weeks apart -- with many pre- and post-op checkups and consultations to be sure it was all going well. She uses the Brandon Surgery Center for the two operations. Each eye gets its cataract removal, new lens implant, and microstent installation in one incredibly fast session. The Surgery Center staff is unusually well coordinated. What you'll notice is that this is a notably happy, cohesive team supporting its surgeons and each other. More business groups should work this well together.Dr. Martino's work itself in the operating room takes an amazingly short amount of time, maybe 20 minutes. The real hallmark of the experience is how completely confident you know you can be in what she's doing. There's never any question that she's on top of what's needed, and the result is a surprisingly stress-free, pain-free surgical experience (local anesthesia) in a well-designed new facility. The regular appointments before and after with the Eye Institute of West Florida are always cool. Staffers at the South Howard location in Tampa where I see Dr. Martino are supportive and service-oriented. [Hint: This location is far less busy than the institute's big home base in Largo, I recommend it.]The results of my surgery with Dr. Martino have been fantastic. The cataract removal and insertion of Alcon lenses has given me back my childhood vision, between 20/15 and 20/20. The world looks so much better without the amber tint and cloudiness of cataracts. They can start developing in your early 40s, so you have no idea how much your vision has been affected. The pressure reduction that the microstents are meant to create -- each is the size of an eyelash -- is so good that I can now stop using the drops I was prescribed for more than a decade for glaucoma. This is why I recommend Dr. Martino without hesitation, and Ive told several friends about her work. She's everything you want in a specialist of this kind and also a great person -- who somehow managed to put up with my awful jokes under anesthesia.

Dr. Johnson is my doctor and he is always friendly and explains everything he's doing and what is always wonderful is that he takes the time to ask if you have any questions and he actually listens!
