A friend and I took a month long road trip years back and one thing we wanted to do is eat lobster in Maine. We drove to Portland and saw this restaurant on a boat. The menu feature twin lobsters. Since we were watching our budget we decided to splurge on this meal.
Mind you, I'm from California and only had lobster tails.
We were not used to a WHOLE lobster. Head, claws, and body. The waiter was sweet but laughed at us when we asked him how do we eat this? He showed us how to break them apart. I looked over at my friend who was mortified. I opened one up for her so she can have a taste since she was apprehensive of eating something that looks alive. She took a bite and said, "this fuckers gone."
It was great experience.
I will never forget my time here at the floating restaurant.

This place has a lot of character. Its an old boat that they turned into a restaurant. Its a great place for lobster, but I love the haddock chowder! The chowder is a yellow/orange color and I could have eaten the whole pot! They have a large parking lot and will validate your parking ticket when you leave. ( I think two hour max) The best place to sit is the outside deck facing the harbor, its almost magical to see the boats float by while you eat.

We arrived at Dimillo's on a cold Friday night during a torrential downpour, and received a very warm greeting from the hostesses. We wanted to have typical Maine lobster, but didn't want a lobster shack experience, and this ended up being the perfect place. The lobster stew was delicious, and as someone else has commented, had generous portions of lobster meat. We then moved on to steamed lobster, which tasted fresh and delicious. Capped off the evening with Maine blueberry pie a la mode - yummy! Add to that good service and free parking, and you've got a winner!

I think you have to have a meal at Dimillo's when you visit Portland. It's that famous.

We had the steamed mussels (delish), spinach salad (huge), twin lobsters steamed (typical), surf & turf (good steak), fried clam dinner (good), and kids fried shrimp (like popcorn shrimp but huge portion). Everything was as good as expected, but not mind blowing.

The one negative is the steamed clams - they did not clean the clams well enough. It was the grittiest, sandiest, grossest dish of clams I have ever, EVER, EVER eaten. When I mentioned it to the waitress, she just said, yeah, they live in the sand so that happens. No, that does not happen if you soak the clams appropriately in the water.

So I probably would've given them a 3.5, but rounded up to 4 since the service was decent and I actually saw the owner there, I believe 2nd generation.

Never had dinner on a floating restaurant! This is pretty much the best waterview you can get (and you can get it from any point in the restaurant!). Food was delicious (we had seafood) and service is very good. Felt extra special being inside a boat.
