So after reading most of the reviews, written by tourists calling the place a tourist trap, I felt it was my duty as a "local" or in this case a former local, to write a review for this place. As far as it being a tourist trap, while I agree that it's a big draw for tourists, many, MANY locals also eat there. It's a family owned place so that brings a lot of people back.

I think Dimillo's is great, old fashioned and a bit outdated, of course, but that's all part of the experience. It was a popular pre prom dinner spot, and I've also been there for many a first date, wedding reception, graduation party, etc.

The food is incredibly fresh and well prepared. For those who say it's expensive... well you're eating on a refurbished boat, in Portland Harbor, and you're eating some of the freshest seafood you could ever get the chance to eat. What do you expect? If you want cheap haul yourself down to one of the seafood chains by the mall and see how you're feeling a couple hours after your meal!

Looking back on it, I guess it is a tourist trap, and I'll fell right for it. I mean having dinner on a boat, how cool does that sound? Plus I can get real Maine lobster. Sounds like a deal.

When I went, they had a special going on where they were celebrating 25 years in business by rolling back the prices to what they were 25 years ago. That means I was able to get two whole lobsters and sides for about $17. Not bad at all.

I'd never had whole lobster before, so the waiter was nice enough to show me how to eat it. He even put my bib on for me. Real nice guy with a good sense of humor. The lobster was great although the potatoes were a little blah.

All in all, a good time for this tourist.

In response to one of the other reviews I saw, I can definitely see this being a tourist trap. Then again, I was a tourist to Portland when I came here so I guess it worked! A friend and I instituted a little something we like to call "Lobster Weekend" a few years back, and decided that for the 2008 installment, we would lose our Portland virginity. Wandering aimlessly, we thought a giant boat looked like a fantastic place for lunch.

I have to say, I liked it here because of the particular meal I got. My friend and I both got the scallop roll which came complete with bacon and melted cheese. The rest is history. Dimillo's will forever be the home of the most amazing, heart attack-inducing sandwich I've ever eaten. I would definitely go back in search of another of these scallop rolls. If it weren't for this though, I imagine that the place is just another touristy restaurant that happens to be located in a boat.

There are many things about Dimillos that enhance the whole dining experience:
It's a ferryboat, converted into a nice restaurant. It's on the Portland waterfront. The decor is nautical, and nicely done. The brass rails are polished, the restrooms are clean, decorated nicely, there's room for large parties and small, there's a nice bar to hang out. In the warm months they serve outdoors on the upper deck. The servers and hostesses are prompt and courteous. There's free parking for diners, a rarity in Portland. There are great views of the harbor, boats and the water activities from every table.
Add those factors to their menu: well prepared seafood and steak American fare, offered at reasonable prices.... This is a fine place to dine and enjoy. For long-time or first time lobster fans, you can count on it being fresh and well-prepared.
The value at Dimillos is excellent. Some of the entrees may not reach gourmet quality, but the prices are reasonable and the whole ambiance is both relaxed and upscale.
As a local, I've dined at Dimillos many times, and often take visitors from out of town there. If this is a tourist trap, then perhaps every town should have a place like this nearby.
