I have used Yelp for years to help me decide which businesses to use around Austin, but have never felt strongly enough about one to actually get on here and write a review of one... until now! Had my Lasik procedure done about less than two weeks ago and my experience with Mann Eye could not have been better.

Let me start by saying I was one of those who thought Lasik would stay on my bucket list forever, beyond my reach because of the cost. I saw the Groupon for Mann Eye a couple of times over the last year, and have heard my favorite radio personality (shout out to Bobby Bones!) talk about it for a couple of years now... but thought I'd never be able to afford it. On a whim, I looked up Mann Eye here on Yelp and I read every review. Many of them mentioned the 24-months of interest free financing... and I decided to go ahead and book my complimentary consultation just to find out if I was even a candidate for Lasik.

From the moment I walked in the door I felt like I was among friends. The front desk staff is the most pleasant I've ever dealt with at any medical office! The consultation went well but I will say it was a bit confusing at first. Although my mind was made up that I wanted to do it, as long as the financing deal worked out, I did feel slightly pressured when they were throwing out dates to schedule my surgery BEFORE they even did any of the tests to see if I was a candidate. I thought to myself... "So are you a candidate as long as you are willing to pay for it?!" We settled on a date the very next week and THEN we went into the other room where they actually do several tests to determine if you meet the criteria for surgery. After those tests I met briefly with Dr. Honour Cessac -- who was probably my favorite of all! She was so unassuming and sweet. I liked her instantly and she made me feel very comfortable with everything.

I had to be out of my contacts for 7 days leading up to surgery, so suffice it to say after 7 days of wearing glasses I could not WAIT for the day to come (during that time I also bought the groupon and was approved for Care Credit, so was able to make the procedure quite affordable). As the afternoon approached I started to feel more nervous than I expected, but of course once I was there my fears were calmed by all the wonderful staff members. My procedure was done by Dr. Lisa McIntire, and I specifically wanted to brag on her in this review because a previous Yelp reviewer did not have a great experience with her. Due to that review, I was a little concerned about being matched with her, however I thought she was very friendly and did an AMAZING job on my eyes. Like everyone else, I only met her a few minutes before the surgery, but that did not bother me at all. She is an extremely capable and skilled surgeon, and took the time to talk to me and answer any questions I had before we got started. She was great!

After surgery my friend drove me home and as instructed, I took a nap to sleep off the Valium. A few hours later I could see clearly enough to watch the Spurs lose the championship (boooooo) from across the living room. On the first day you have to wear clear plastic eye coverings taped to your face (and you have to sleep in them for 5 nights). I didn't enjoy that part... but it's tolerable. By the next morning I could see great and drove myself to my follow up appointment. I now have 20/15 vision!

I did want to mention that while my overall experience was definitely great - there WAS more discomfort involved than I anticipated. On the evening immediately after my surgery it was hard to keep my eyes open for more than a few seconds at a time - they were incredibly dry and I occasionally had the sensation of something being in my eye. The artificial tear drops will be worth GOLD those first few days, especially. My eyes were INCREDIBLY dry in the early mornings. Two weeks later I'm noticing a slight improvement, which I'm sure will continue to get better over time. But plan on experiencing at least some discomfort (note: not pain... I was honestly never in any pain for even a second).

One last thing I wanted to mention about cost...There are two prescription drops that you have to use for 5-6 days, but my insurance covered most of those and they only cost me $10 each. I've also purchased two boxes of artificial tears at about $12 each, and anticipate needing to buy 2 more until the dryness subsides. So my total spent on drops will probably be around $65-$70. My total costs were $100 for Groupon, $70 for drops, and $3995 for procedure for a total of $4165. This might vary for you depending on what specials they have going on at Mann Eye, how many boxes of drops you buy, whether insurance covers any of the prescribed drops, and whether you have a complicated situation such as an astigmatism or some other eye condition. I've just included this as a general guideline/estimation.

I highly recommend Mann Eye if you are considering Lasik!

Mann Eye completely changed my life. I went from being practically blind to better than 20/20 vision in a matter of a week. The doctors are extremely pleasant and very knowledgeable. Even the staff at Mann Eye are first rate, very personable and friendly. The actual lasik procedure was completely painless and only took a matter of minutes. This place really does care about their patients, even after 6 months they still schedule post check ups to see the progress of my vision. The facilities are very clean and comfortable as well.

I was hesitant to use a Groupon, which Mann Eye offered, on my own eyeballs but I really ended up saving a lot of money in the end. I highly recommend this place if you're considering getting lasik eye surgery.

After thinking about Lasik for years, I finally decided it was time (and got my wife's blessing!) I had already done my research about the mechanics of the procedure, and after reading reviews and talking to several people who had already done it, I decided on Mann Eye Institute. I'm SO GLAD I did!

The free consultation went smoothly. Kevin answered all my questions about the procedure and the recovery period. I went to the North Austin location for the consultation, so I got to meet Dr. Mark Chavana for the eye exam. He was very professional, personable and relaxed, making the consultation exam and the post-op exams a breeze.

The day of the procedure, the staff was perfect! Cheerful, and almost more excited about the big day than I was. Someone came out to the waiting area and described the procedure as well as the post-op instructions, easing any nerves I had left.

Dr. Paul Mann was GREAT!. He answered any final questions I had about the procedure and then described exactly what he was doing and everything that was happening, putting me completely at ease.

I just had my 1-month post-op exam with Dr. Chavana, and I could read every letter except one on the 20/10 line! No more glasses or contacts!

In my years of utilizing Yelp to find the best spots in town, I don't think I've ever once written a review. Mann Eye Institute is beyond deserving of 5 stars.

I was browsing Groupon one day for a deal on a massage when I came across Mann Eye's deal. I had a friend who'd just had LASIK done days before and it got me wishing for it again. But I grew up blue collar and I'll die blue collar; there's no way I'd ever be able to afford LASIK!

Despite my financial shortcomings, I called up for a free consultation; that way, I'd at least know if my dream was possible, that I was eligible to get LASIK.

I walked in to be greeted by theee friendliest front desk I've ever approached. They got me checked in and I waited just a few moments to meet with Kevin. He explained the procedure and risks and blahblahblah, and also mentioned that financing was an option. When I brought up the Groupon, he advised me not to waste the $100; they'd just give me the price the procedure would be with the deal (less than $4k for BOTH eyes!). Since LASIK has been a (nearly) lifelong dream, I had very few questions about the procedure and side effects. I was more concerned about if I could afford to do it. He told me financing was available through CareCredit, no interest for 2 years. *GROAN* I've applied for CareCredit more than a few times, and have always been denied. Despite my wonderful experience with the staff that day, I went home feeling a bit melancholy that I would not be able to have the procedure done.

Lo and behold, the stars aligned and CareCredit actually approved me for the amount of the procedure!! I called immediately and scheduled an appointment for 3 or 4 weeks out (I had to stop wearing my contacts for at least 2 weeks before) and got super amped.

Flash forward to my pre-op appointment 2 days before; Mirta took my measurements and was wonderful, engaging, and warm. There was a bit of a geek-out session when they discovered my corneas were exactly the same measurements (what can I say, I'm a symmetrical freak of nature!). Dr. Cessac came after and talked me through what to expect on LASIK day, and Kevin came in to provide a little more detail. I felt like I was being attended to by the entire staff. The entire awesome, friendly, knowledgable, humorous staff.

LASIK day I expected myself to be a ball of anxiety. I'm not sure if it was the Valium or the staff talking me through each step, but I felt incredibly comfortable throughout the quick, painless procedure. I had been told previously to expect to be there for 1-2 hours, but I was in and out in less than 45 minutes.

I was only able to sleep for 2 hours when I got home (they recommend at least 3), but I was too excited. I still must've slept through any post-op discomfort (itching, burning), because I felt absolutely normal when I woke up (minus the cyclops goggles). I was able to still go grocery shopping, catch up on some Breaking Bad, and grab a margarita at Chuy's (all in the cyclops goggles). I drove myself to my post-op the next morning, and again was in and out in less than 15 minutes. They even gave me a little gift (fittingly, a coffee mug that reads "I heart My LASIK A Latte" and my favorite flavor of Bebop Biscotti; HOW DID THEY KNOW?!).

All in all, I don't think I could've had a better experience. I never felt like I was just another patient when I walked in, and still can't get over the fact that I CAN SEE. MY EYES WORK. IT'S FABULOUS.

I love you, Mann Eye!
