This place is a rip off.

I came here for an free evaluation and arrived 15 minutes early just in case they could see me early...wrong. I was seen an hour later (45 minutes late.) The lobby and entire office hasn't been updated in a good 15 years. For $3500 a pop you'd think they would be able to update. Whoever did all of the little tests on me barely knew what they were doing, I even saw my eyelid covering half of some of the images of my eyes. When I was all done with testing I was told I was a great candidate. Cool.
Now back to the waiting room to speak with the financial consultant and surgery scheduler. She was with someone, and I waited for her to emerge after 20 minutes and think she's going to call me, nope. Another person ahead of me. Not trying to wait another 20+ minutes I ask If she can give me a phone consult because I had to go. She quickly scrambles for a folder full of info and then scratches down a figure. $3500 for custom lasik and to call her and let her know if I would like to schedule. I ask about their $3000 groupon, and she said this is for the old version of Lasik with their old machine. How would this even be discounted then?? Sounds like a scam to me. She wouldn't budge on the $3500 so I said thank you and then she asked if I still needed a phone consult per our 1 min consult. No thanks,
I did some more research and ended up getting Lasik done for an out the door price of $1400 at Lasik Vision Institute in San Bruno. I see 20/15 (Ellis said they could only get me to 20/20) and they have an even higher level of technology because they have offices all over the US and can afford it. I would HIGHLY recommend them instead.

***Response to comment on 7/23/15
You've taken the high road by calling me a liar? Ok... Anyways, the Lasik I had was done by HIGHLY RATED Dr. James Abrams PERMANENT Doctor @ San Bruno Lasik Vision Institute, and the machine he uses was newer than yours WITH eye tracking. (Anyone researching, feel free to call them and get info on their technology.) And for the record, you clearly prey on non-price shoppers. Who wouldn't price shop an expensive and invasive procedure like this??? I found you BOTH on the same website when I searched on Groupon, and I had visited you first before going to Lasik Institute and I had mentioned both groupons. Not even sure why that matters. All that matters is that you are overpriced for an older level of technology. I'm allowed to report my experience with you on Yelp, and I'd appreciate not being called a liar. Yet proving my point once again the character of your business.

I also like how this review is coming from "Dr. Ellis" who is a Stanford trained Doctor but can't even spell "practice" and "definitely." FURTHERMORE, you ONLY see Dr. Ellis on surgery day. Not pre-op or post-op like in this comment. This is explained to you by the lady doctor (who was the only great person there.) I have never met Dr. Ellis, and I find it funny someone else (clearly the sales rep) is falsely impersonating him. You guys are a joke....and who's the LIAR now?

Great, I did my surgery on December 2014 we are now in June 2015 and I can see clearly. Although it was a process because it did hurt a little once the anesthesia wore off but they give you medication unfortunate for me my pharmacy didn't have it when my mom when to look for it. They had to get it from somewhere else. Which I had to bear the burning sensation for a couple of hours. But once I had my medication it was smooth. No pain during the surgery either. You berly even feel it. And it only takes 15 minutes. The filling papers and dealing with payment and checks probably around 2-3 hours. I recovered my full vision little by little. Around March I was seeing very clear, the first couple of weeks were blurry. Even to look at computer was blurry. I'd say if you're vision is to the point where you can't see anything away from you without you're glasses go for it. It is very worth it, to be able to see the world clear again!

My primary care doctor gave me an urgent referral to see an opthalmologist in this group after I developed Shingles in my right eye. Soon after the referral was in hand, I called their office to set up a same day appointment. The person there, "Marcia" said she needed to call my insurance company to get approval but I would need to pay $90 for an urgent care appointment. She later called me back and told me that it wasn't approved as their group was not "in my HMO network." I knew that wasn't true as my primary care doctor found them online as part of my HMO. I decided to call my insurance company to find out. After a long time on the phone they assured me that Ellis Eye was indeed in my network. I called back and spoke again to Marcia who was completely unhelpful, unsympathetic and rude. She didn't try to help me sort it out, and didn't seem to care in the least bit, that I needed urgent care. She told me I could pay $340 and bill my insurance, and by the way, that the Dr was leaving in and hour and a half! When my primary care provider finally called them to confirm the referral and that I was indeed in network, they still refused to see me! This place is completely unprofessional with extremely poor customer service and unkind staff. All they seem to care about is getting their money at the expense of the patient's health.

1998 I was preparing to retire from 21 yrs with the Air Force. My sight was 20/600 (bad) and I could not even be considered for a job as a police officer due to my "uncorrected" vision. I took leave from work and had laser surgery by Dr. Ellis in El Cerrito. After a lifetime of terrible eyesight I peeked out my front window and WOW...20/20 vision. I retired from the Air Force and became a police officer.
Fastfwd 17 yrs and as a 55 yr old police officer I only wear contacts when I'm working. My days off I do not wear ANY contacts or glasses!!! Dr.Ellis' surgery was painless and truly the best investment ever.
I am writing this review because my wife is having a consultation next week to have her eyes done and I would NEVER consider doing it anywhere else based on my results.

T.
