I've been going to Eye Surgeons on and off since I was 6. My biggest complaint with them is that they make it very clear that they care more about insurance and profits than your care. Although I have many examples of this, I'll share my experience from my latest visit. I came in with a medical problem that was making it difficult to wear my contacts. Once I was diagnosed, I asked the doctor several questions about the nature of the problem, how this would affect my contact wearing, and what steps I could take to minimize the problem in the future (such as contact materials to avoid, solutions that would work best for this issue). Because my questions were related to my contacts, the doctor simply refused to answer them and advised me to make a separate appointment to discuss my contacts. I understand that insurance is a pain and certainly didn't want to take advantage of this doctor, but I couldn't believe he just wouldn't provide answers that would directly affect my medical issue going forward. I left feeling very much like a cog in a machine, and I definitely did not feel valued, heard, or respected.

I feel she doesnt look through all of each patients history. She still is under the impression that I have a condition that their specialist has confirmed I do not have.

So, I want to preface this by saying everyone I interacted with was very polite and friendly. That said let me explain the experience I had with this place and why Im giving this two stars. Now once they had me in the exam room they shoved a paper in my face to sign that said I would owe up to $191 that day for contact fitting fees. Now I have TWO LAYERS of insurance (Medicaid and private insurance through an employer), and a medical diagnosis for medically necessary contact lenses that are special kinds of hard lenses that I need. Now, I was referred here specifically by my primary because he told me they take Medicaid. Thats not this places fault he told me that, it just adds to my frustration when they shove a paper in my face and tell me theyll charge me anywhere from 25 to 191 dollars (it ended up being $125) that I HAVE TO PAY THAT DAY or I just dont get contacts. Again, I have TWO INSURANCE PROVIDERS - not this places fault, like I said, that we live in an hypercapitalist hellscape and insurance will ALWAYS push as much off into you as they can get away with, but again it adds to my frustration. So, lets get to the stuff that IS this places fault: I tell the nurse then and there that I dont have money to pay that today. She assured me that I could talk to Greg (I never did get to speak to Greg so Im not throwing shade at Greg) and figure something out re: payment. Okay fine, she goes about doing a brief exam and I am shuffled off to Dr Baldwins exam room and told that any questions I have about payment can be answered by him. Now, Dr Baldwin was very polite and very professional, BUT when I told him UP FRONT before any work had been done that I cannot pay this fee, he again assured me that it will be fine and goes ahead and does the contact fitting. Then, Im led around for a few more tests without being told what theyre for the when Im finished Im told to go to the front desk where I have to AGAIN explain that today I cannot pay the $125 ninja fee that I didnt know existed until they had me in their exam room. Im being charged $125 that I have explained several times that I dont have to try on contacts, except now Im having this humiliating conversation in the front waiting room in front of about fifteen strangers. So Im upset because we live in a culture that goes out of its way to shame poor people for being poor and now a room full of people I dont know now know an embarrassing factoid about me, namely that Im poor; but thats not all, because I TOLD THEM AHEAD OF TIME that Im poor and they pressured me and rushed me along with promises that it would be fine that this fee they sprung on me when Im already in the damn chair wouldnt be a problem before then embarrassing me in front of a room full of strangers. So thanks for that.

Although Dr Hansel is very friendly and clearly knows his stuff, he is routinely AT LEAST 30-60 minutes behind.
