Dr. Walters is excellent. He is direct, attentive, and has treated me for an eye condition that confounded several doctors before I found him.He is probably the best clinician I have encountered in any field.

Dr. Bazarian and the team at Maine Eye Center saved my sight. In 2016 I had an eye injury that resulted in a total loss of sight in my right eye. In April of this year, I suffered a retinal tear in my left eye. It was traumatic and terrifying as I faced the life-altering possibility of complete blindness. I called Dr. Richard Bazarian at Maine Eye Center and was transferred to a team member named Scott, who advised me to get to the offices in Portland immediately as medical intervention within 24 hours of the tear provided the best odds of saving my vision. Despite a completely booked schedule, I was seen within an hour of my call. I arrived there in a highly emotional state, certain that I would be totally blind. From the moment I arrived, every member of the medical team treated me with compassion and dedication to saving my only working eye. Dr. Bazarian completed his evaluation, advising me that I had indeed suffered a retinal tear, resulting in blood and vitreous material spilling into my inner eye and causing loss of vision. He took quick action and performed a laser procedure on-site, to stabilize the tear from further tearing which could result in a retinal detachment. He explained that my body would absorb the blood and material over the course of several weeks, and to expect ups and downs in my visual acuity during that period. I woke the next day in a panic as it seemed the vision worsened overnight. I called and once again was advised to come in as soon as I could and they would accommodate me. Dr. Bazarian calmly assessed me, and advised me that the tear was stable and was patient and understanding of my alarm and I left with absolute confidence in his commitment to my care. Unfortunately the delicate blood vessels behind the tear kept bursting and two days later I was once again advised to come in immediately. I stated that I was worried that I was I might be overreacting as I was told to expect changes as my eye healed. Scott assured me that there was no such thing as "crying wolf" when it comes to my sight. Dr. Bazarian recognized the complication resulting from the blood vessels behind the repair, and advised me that a more invasive procedure called a vitrectomy was needed. Two days later, under anesthesia in their on-site surgical center, Dr. Bazarian completed the vitrectomy which included placement of nitrous oxide gas bubble inside my eye. The purpose of bubble was to apply pressure to the back of the eye to assist the retina to successfully reattach. The surgery itself was painless, however I had to lay face down, 24 hours a day, for at least seven days and that was the biggest challenge of the entire experience.But...IT WORKED! Seven weeks since surgery, the bubble gets smaller each day, and my vision is restored to 20/20. To me, it is miraculous. Dr. Bazarian and his entire administrative and medical team exhibited compassion, experience and surgical skill from the moment I first called. From assessment through surgery and follow-up visits, I was made to feel like I was their highest priority. I could have made the trip to Massachusetts Eye and Ear, but am so glad I didn't. Maine Eye Center provided me a level of care and intervention that easily rivals any other practice in New England, and my entire course of care was done right here in Portland. I had cataract surgery today at Marginal Way under the excellent care of Dr. Curtis Libby and staff. I was a little ansy but everyone gave me the best support and care. I was treated with amazing professionalism and was given excellent care from arrival to discharge. I am employed with Maine Eye Center and was extremely impressed with all who took part in my care.
