    ABOUT
    Dr. Emily Sarah Charlson
Ophthalmologist Emily Charlson, M.D., Ph.D. is a specialist in oculofacial, orbital, and aesthetic plastic surgery. She is an expert in eyelid, orbit, and tear drainage surgery including droopy eyelids and eyebrows, eyelid bags, eyelid cancer/Mohs reconstruction, eyelid malpositions, thyroid eye disease/decompression, orbital tumors or masses, and tearing due to tear drainage system problems. Dr. Charlson implements the latest medical and surgical therapies including biologics for orbital carcinoma, corneal neurotization (nerve grafting) to restore corneal sensation, and Teprotumumab for thyroid eye disease treatment. Cosmetically, she performs aesthetic eyelid, eyebrow, and midface surgery, as well as injectable fillers/botox and skin resurfacing for full facial rejuvenation. Using the latest minimally invasive techniques, she strives to balance eye function and aesthetics with patient-centered customized approaches. Dr. Charlson graduated from The University of Pennsylvania after a 7-year dual degree MD-PhD medical scientist training program. Her Ph.D. work centered on genomics, deep-sequencing, and bioinformatics with the Human Microbiome Project. She presented her work at numerous national and international conferences with publications in Nature Biotechnology, Nature Methods, and others. Her work is recognized with the University of Pennsylvania Institute for Translational Medicine & Therapeutics Prize for Clinical Translational Research and Jeffery W. Berger Ophthalmology Research Award, among others. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of California, Irvine. Here, Dr. Charlson led the development of a novel digital prosthetic eye using OLED micro-screens and 3D printed glasses incorporating a convolutional neural network artificial intelligence algorithm for pupil tracking funded by an Institute for Clinical Translational Research Rising Investigator NIH Grant. This work was presented at several international conferences and recognized with a UCI Research Excellence Award and American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery (ASOPRS) Innovation & Achievement Award. Dr. Charlson pursued an intensive 2-year American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery fellowship in oculofacial, orbit, and aesthetics as of one of only a handful of fellows annually selected by ASOPRS with Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University. She received a Heed Fellowship Award from the Society of Heed Fellows and lead significant contributions to survival analysis of globe/eye salvaging therapy for orbital malignancy, use of immune-checkpoint inhibitors for advanced orbital carcinoma, and new methods of corneal neurotization. Most recently, she designed novel artificial intelligence algorithms to predict thyroid eye disease development in newly diagnosed Graves’ and Hashimoto’s disease patients useful for evaluating the risk of thyroidectomy vs radioactive iodine ablation (RAI) in thyroid patients. This work was recognized at international conferences and awarded the ASOPRS Innovation & Achievement Award. Outside of medicine, she loves running/swimming/cycling as a triathlete, taking her two Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies to the beach, and traveling internationally with her family.
